Recycling at the Transfer Station
We greatly expanded our town's recycling efforts at the transfer station in the fall of 2013 with Casella Waste Management's "Zero-Sort" Recycling service. Our single stream recycling materials go into a compactor box and are hauled to the Casella Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Rutland where they are sorted and baled for the recycled materials market. The sorting process is very interesting. It employs high speed conveyors and both automated mechanical and manual sorting.
The list of items acceptable for the recycling is long; you may download a Cavendish Recycling Booklet or pick one up at the Town Office.
The Transfer Station also accepts food scraps at no charge, Food scraps are:
Parts of food items that are typically discarded rather than eaten: peels, rinds, cores, eggshells, seeds, pits, bones, coffee grounds and paper filters, loose-leaf tea & paper tea bags, and fats/oils/grease.
Food that was not finished: "plate scraps" or leftovers that went bad. Any type of food can become scraps--bread, pasta, soup, veggies, fruit, sauces, meat, dairy, sweets, etc.
Recyclable/biodegradable plastic bags are NOT accepted in the compost (they do not break down quickly and blow into the surrounding woods).
Household Hazardous Waste Depot
The Southern Windsor/Windham Counties Solid Waste District’s household hazardous waste depot (HHW Depot) in Springfield is open through September, Tuesday and Thursday mornings, by appointment.
Make an appointment by going online to the calendar at www.vtsolidwastedistrict.org or by calling 802-674-9235. There is a fee of $10 per vehicle for up to ten gallons of HHW. Cash or check – no credit or debit cards.
Bring in as much paint as you want – there is no charge for that since people who buy paint in Vermont pay a fee on each can which helps to pay for its recycling or proper disposal. There is a list online of what we take. We can also send you one. Just call and ask.
You won’t wait in line. We will remove the material from your car or truck, accept your money, and you can get on with your day. We hope to see you soon.
Please visit the Southern Windsor/Windham Solid Waste Management District website for more information.
