Transfer Station

Recycling and trash disposal at the transfer station is by permit. Permits are available to Cavendish residents and property owners in person at the Cavendish Town Office and the Transfer Station, or via mail by printing the Registration Form and mailing it, with payment, to the Town Office. Permits are $5 each.

Renters please provide proof of residency (i.e. lease, driver’s license, telephone bill, etc) showing your Cavendish address.

Property Taxes

Property tax payments are accepted in person, via mail or by phone using a debit/credit card. ACH debit may be set up to automatically pay the quarterly amounts on the due dates by filling out the form below. Please return completed forms to the Town Office.

Municipal Utility (Water/Wastewater) Department

If you are adding additional bedrooms to an existing home, or building a new home within the village areas, you will need to fill out applications for additional water and wastewater allocation.

Marriage License

Marriage licenses may be purchased at the town office through the town clerk for $80; they are valid for 60 days from the date issued. After your wedding ceremony, your officiant will complete the license; the license becomes a marriage certificate. It must be returned to the town clerk's office where it was issued within 10 days after the wedding so that the marriage can be officially registered.

Birth and Death Certificates

Certified copies of Vermont Birth or Death Certificates may be requested from the Town Clerk’s office by printing and filling out the Application below. Certified copies are $10 each.

You may also order copies of vital records from the State of Vermont Dept. of Health through their Vital Records Request Service. There is a small surcharge added to certificates ordered through this service. Click Here for Vermont Vital Records Request Service.


Building & Driveway Permit Applications

The Town of Cavendish has a Building Ordinance which requires that a Building Permit be approved by the Town Manager and filed in the Town Office. An Access Permit is also required before a new driveway is constructed. Please contact the Town Manager if you have questions about the Building Ordinance, Building Permit or Access Permit at (802) 226.7291.

Do you need a state permit? The Permit Assistance Program is part of the Environmental Assistance Office, a non-regulatory branch of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation. A Wastewater System & Potable Water Supply Permit may be required for the subdivision of land or construction, modifications, or changes in use of buildings and structures. An Act 250 permit may also be required; Act 250 is Vermont's development and control law. Contact a permit specialist for advice on determining what permits you may need for your building project.  For help with State Permits please visit the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation website.

State Construction Permits are required for public buildings, including rentals and businesses.
